Yaesu FTX-1 Detailed Guide: Native WIRES-X and YSF Hotspot Operation

Save the LDARC Club Repeater to Memory

Program two memories for the club repeater so analog FM and C4FM are easy to select later.

  • LDARC FM: receive 145.420 MHz, transmit 144.820 MHz, negative offset 0.600 MHz, tone encode 88.5 Hz.
  • LDARC C4FM: receive 145.420 MHz, negative offset 0.600 MHz, no analog tone, digital voice in DN or AMS.

1. Program the analog FM repeater memory

  1. Press V/M until the radio is in VFO mode.
  2. Enter 145.420 MHz.
  3. Press and hold N/W and select FM.
  4. Press and hold FUNC, open RADIO SETTING, then MODE FM.
  5. Set RPT SHIFT to minus and confirm the offset is 0.600 MHz.
  6. Set SQL TYPE to tone encode and set TONE FREQ to 88.5 Hz.
  7. Confirm the transmit frequency is 144.820 MHz.
  8. Press and hold V/M, choose an unused memory from the list, and save it as LDARC FM.

2. Program the C4FM memory

  1. Return to VFO mode and enter 145.420 MHz.
  2. Use the same minus shift and 0.600 MHz offset.
  3. Turn the analog tone off for this digital memory.
  4. Press and hold N/W and select C4FM, DN, or AMS as available.
  5. Save the second memory as LDARC C4FM.

Final check

After saving both memories, switch to each memory and verify the display, mode, offset, and tone settings before transmitting.

This guide is for LDARC members using the Yaesu FTX-1 with native Yaesu WIRES-X nodes/repeaters and with YSF reflectors through Pi-Star or WPSD hotspots. The main LDARC digital destination covered here is US Hemet Hangout, displayed on hotspots as YSF-59073 – US HEMET HANGOUT.

The Important Distinction

Yaesu System Fusion is the C4FM digital voice system used by this radio. WIRES-X is Yaesu’s Internet linking system for true WIRES-X nodes and rooms. YSF reflectors are commonly used by Pi-Star and WPSD hotspots and are not the same network as Yaesu WIRES-X.

This matters because a radio control labeled WIRES-X may work differently on a hotspot than it does on a Yaesu repeater or node. On a hotspot, the practical target is the YSF reflector: YSF-59073 – US HEMET HANGOUT.

Prepare the FTX-1

  1. Use a programmed memory channel for the repeater, node, or hotspot frequency.
  2. Use C4FM DN for a known digital path, or AMS if you intentionally want automatic mode selection.
  3. Use a suitable power level. Low power is usually best for a nearby hotspot; use reliable power for repeater access.
  4. Use DG-ID TX/RX 00 unless the repeater, node, or hotspot specifically tells you otherwise.
  5. The FTX-1 is newer and menu wording can vary by firmware release. Use the latest Yaesu manual for exact screen labels.

Set 1: Native Yaesu WIRES-X Instructions

Use this set when the access point is a real Yaesu WIRES-X node or a repeater with native WIRES-X support.

  1. Select the VHF/UHF C4FM path used by the WIRES-X node or repeater.
  2. Set the modulation mode to C4FM.
  3. Set normal DG-ID TX/RX to the local node requirement, normally 00.
  4. Set WIRES-X DG-ID to AUTO unless the node requires a specific 01-99 value.
  5. Open the WIRES-X function from the radio menu/control screen.
  6. Use the displayed search, direct, history, or category options to select a room/node.
  7. Disconnect from the room/node before leaving the WIRES-X path.

Native WIRES-X DG-ID

Radio Setting > WIRES-X > WIRES-X DG-ID on current FTX-1 documentation. For most open nodes, use AUTO. Use 01-99 only when the node owner or repeater instructions specify that value.

Set 2: YSF Reflector Instructions for Pi-Star or WPSD

Use this set when the FTX-1 talks to a personal hotspot. The radio talks locally to the hotspot, and the hotspot links to the reflector.

Configure the Hotspot

  1. Open the Pi-Star or WPSD dashboard.
  2. Enable YSF/C4FM service.
  3. Select YSF-59073 – US HEMET HANGOUT.
  4. Apply changes and let the service restart if needed.
  5. Confirm the hotspot frequency and callsign settings.

Configure the Radio

  1. Program or select the hotspot simplex frequency.
  2. Use C4FM DN or AMS.
  3. Set DG-ID TX/RX to 00 unless you deliberately configured another value on the hotspot.
  4. Transmit briefly and confirm the dashboard shows activity from your callsign.

Steer the Hotspot

  1. If your hotspot supports radio steering, open the WIRES-X function from the radio menu/control screen.
  2. Search for YSF59073 or US HEMET HANGOUT.
  3. If the reflector list does not appear or the command fails, use the dashboard instead.
  4. Remember: this is YSF reflector steering, not full Yaesu WIRES-X.

DG-ID Details

  • Normal DG-ID TX/RX: controls which C4FM traffic the radio sends and hears. Use 00 for open operation.
  • WIRES-X DG-ID: controls access to native WIRES-X nodes that use a matching DG-ID. AUTO is the normal open-node setting.
  • Hotspot DG-ID: should normally be 00 unless you intentionally created a private or filtered hotspot path.

VFO and Memory (V/M)

VFO is the working area for entering a frequency and changing its settings. Memory recalls a saved channel exactly as it was stored. Because this is an all-mode HF/VHF/UHF radio, its menus also include band, mode, filter, transmit, antenna, and data-operation settings.

  1. Select VFO before creating a new channel.
  2. Enter the frequency, mode, repeater shift, tone, and any digital setting.
  3. Use the radio’s memory-write command to select an empty or replacement memory channel, then save it with a useful label.
  4. Select V/M or the radio’s Memory screen to recall that channel later. Change a memory only when you intend to change the saved setup; use VFO for temporary tuning.

The menu holds the settings that remain in effect after you leave the screen. Open the menu only when you want to change radio behavior, then save or exit normally. Menu labels can vary with firmware; the radio’s official manual is the complete version-specific list.

For LDARC use, the menu settings that matter most are: negative repeater shift, PL 88.5 Hz for analog FM, DN or AMS for C4FM, normal DG-ID 00 for open C4FM, and native WIRES-X room 62917.

Operating Practice

  • Listen before transmitting.
  • Leave a pause between transmissions so linked systems can reset.
  • Identify normally with your callsign.
  • On a hotspot, confirm the dashboard destination before calling.
  • On a repeater, follow the repeater owner’s WIRES-X and DG-ID instructions.

Use these LDARC-specific settings when programming the radio or setting up a hotspot for the club digital system.

Access Through a Hotspot

  • YSF / C4FM hotspot path: select YSF-59073 – US HEMET HANGOUT. In many Pi-Star/WPSD lists this may appear as YSF59073 – US-HEMET HANGOUT or simply 59073.
  • XLX path: select XLX618 Module H. Module H is the Hemet Hangout module. In WPSD this is selected directly as XLX618 and Module H.
  • Bridge note: LDARC WIRES-X room 62917, YSF-59073 US Hemet Hangout, and XLX618 Module H are part of the Hemet-area linked digital system when the bridge is active.

Using Another WIRES-X Repeater

  1. Connect your radio to the local WIRES-X-capable repeater or node.
  2. Open the radio’s WIRES-X function.
  3. Use search/direct entry, history, or category list to find LDARC or room 62917.
  4. Connect to the room, listen first, then identify normally.
  5. Disconnect when finished so the local repeater is not left tied to the room unexpectedly.

Troubleshooting

The radio control does not steer my hotspot

Use the dashboard. Many hotspots support only limited WIRES-X style reflector control, and some configurations do not support it reliably.

I cannot reach US Hemet Hangout

  • Confirm YSF/C4FM service is enabled.
  • Confirm the reflector is YSF-59073 – US HEMET HANGOUT.
  • Confirm the radio and hotspot use the same simplex frequency.
  • Confirm DG-ID TX/RX are 00 unless another value is intentional.

The repeater does not respond to native WIRES-X

  • Confirm the repeater supports native WIRES-X access.
  • Confirm the node is online and idle enough to accept commands.
  • Confirm normal DG-ID and WIRES-X DG-ID requirements.
  • Disconnect from the room/node, then leave the WIRES-X function screen when finished.
